NSUK Declares War Against Unethical Conducts; Unveil Whistle Blowing Policy

Nasarawa State University Keffi has declared war against unethical conducts perpetrated by staff and students in the university.

Consequently, it has constituted a ten-man committee to identify perpetrators of the menace and bring them to justice.

Vice Chancellor of the university - Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed set up the committee while flagging off a whistle-blowing-policy against unethical practices in the institution in Keffi on Wednesday October 2, 2019.

The Committee Against Unethical Conducts headed by Dr Suleiman Inchi, has the Dean of Students Affairs - Dr Abdullahi Salau Modibo, Barrister Jennifer Ibi, representatives of Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian University SSANU, Non Academic Staff Union NASU, NAT, Students' Union Government SUG and Security Unit of the university as members while Dr Yahaya Noma is to serve as Secretary.

The Committee is mandated to investigate all issues bothering on unethical activities involving both teaching and non-teaching staff as well students of the university and report directly to the office of the Vice Chancellor for prompt action.

Areas to be investigated and take decisive action by the committee include cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, prostitution, drug abuse,  sale of grades, stealing, fighting, appointment with students on unholy hours, kickbacks and unnecessary delay before collection of transcripts, as well as all forms of bribery and corruption.

Announcing membership of the committee, the Vice Chancellor - Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed, said for Nasarawa State University to join the league of best universities in the world, all hands must be on deck to rid the university of unacceptable practices on campus.

While declaring amnesty for perpetrators of unethical practices willing to renounce their acts, Suleiman Bala Mohammed, renewed his administration's commitment to prosecute the war against unethical conducts without fear or favour.

In doing that, the Vice Chancellor, noted, his administration will be firm, fair and just to all, calling on members of the university community especially students to take advantage of the dedicated lines provided to assist the committee with credible information that will help sanitize the system.

In a goodwill message, the Dean of Students Affairs - Dr Abdullahi Salau Modibo - who welcomed the whistle-blowing-policy, charged students to be objective in blowing the whistle, stressing that no act of vindictiveness will be tolerated.

On their part, Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities at the institution - Dr Tanimu Yusuf, his counterpart from the Joint Action Committee - Comrade Zubairu Adamu and the President of Students' Union Government at the institution - Comrade Victor Affiku Tsaku, all declared their total support to the whistle-blowing-policy which they believe will sanitize the system.

They however called for due process in prosecuting the war against unethical activities, adding that the best way of fighting the menace is to give priority to the welfare of both staff and students of the university.

During the flagging off of the whistle-blowing-policy tagged; "See it, say it", two dedicated lines were presented to members of the public to report any unethical practice that will help authorities of the University take decisive action to reposition the institution.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed the same day flagged off free HIV/Hepatitis screening, counseling and distribution of condoms to members of the university community especially students of the Department of Mass Communication as part of activities marking the 2019 MACOSA Week.

The free medical outreach was organized by the 2018/2019 exco of the Mass Communication Students' Association  (MACOSA) in collaboration with the Nasarawa State Aids Control Agency (NASACA) and the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria operating in Nasarawa State.

Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed commended the laudable initiative of the MACOSA exco which he described as timely, saying it will go a long way in reducing the incidences of sexually transmitted diseases and curtail the spread of HIV Aids as well as other deadly viruses among young people.

While declaring his support to the effort by MACOSA leadership, the Vice Chancellor stressed the need for students to always support leaders with good initiatives such as the ones exhibited by the 2018/2019 MACOSA leaders.

Earlier in a welcome address, the President - Mass Communication Students' Association (MACOSA) - Chief Servant Moses John Jatau, said the medical outreach which is the first in the Faculty of Social Sciences, was targeted at screening, counseling and distributing condoms free of charge to about 5000 members of the university community particularly students of the Department of Mass Communication.

According to the MACOSA Chief Servant, "the essence of the free medical outreach is to ensure that students know their status with a view to living a life that will contribute to national development and curtail the spread of both HIV and Hepatitis viruses in the society."

He appreciated the Vice Chancellor, who despite his tight schedules, found time to flag off the free medical exercise.

Also in attendance during the flagging off ceremony were the Dean - Faculty of Social Sciences - Professor Theophilus Lagi, representative of the Head of Department - Mass Communication - Dr Anthony Igyuve, some senior lecturers of the Department and large number of students.

Universities 2019 Admission Pattern for all Nigerian Students. (Know your fate in getting admitted in NSUK)

www.nsukguide.comThe Former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Professor Peter Okebukola, has disclosed that the scrapping of Post-UTME means that tertiary institutions will now go back to the agreement NUC had with Vice-Chancellors in 2004 when it introduced Post-UTME which is to screen candidates on oral interview and written essay.

Admission Guide to All Tertiary Aspirants

Students seeking admission may have gotten a lifeline following a new set of guidelines by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
According to The Nation, the board on Monday, July 4, explained that the new guidelines for admission process was made through its website following consultations with universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.
The new admission process would work for candidates who wrote the examination and direct-entry, with the board explaining that universities would collect screening fees from candidates at the end of admission process.
The board stated: “Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been given provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now.”
Explaining further, JAMB stated that the point system where admission would depend on the point tally of the candidate means: “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith.
“The points are evenly spread out between your O’level and JAMB results to provide a level playing field for all.
“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points, the exam could be NECO, WAEC, GCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets two points. So, this means that aspirants with only one result are at an advantage but only just.”
Candidates also have more chances of gaining admission with better grades in their O’level thus: 
A – 6 marks, B – 4 marks, C – 3 marks.
In addition, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores also have implications during the admission process.
180 – 200 (or 20 – 23 marks), 200 – 250 (or 24 – 33 points), 251 – 300 (or 34 – 43), 300 – 400 (or 44 – 60 points) as well as five JAMB results per point added.
The admission board informed also that a candidate with 180 – 185 gets 20 points, a candidate with 186 – 190 gets 21 points, stating further that the point system for direct entry will be released soon just as fees would still be charged for screening which has replaced the post UTME.

How Admission will be conducted by JAMB

If the proposed modality for admission by JAMB is to be adopted for 2018 admission screening, below is how it will be conducted.
  1. JAMB must offer a candidate an admission before such candidates qualifies for screening in the institution he or she has been provisionally admitted. This means that institutions can only screening candidates sent to them by JAMB as having been provisionally admitted in such institution.
  2. Institutions admission screening processes will now be based on point system. The first on the point system is the O’level grading. Candidates who have only one O-level result will stand a better chance of gaining admission than candidates with 2 results. One 0’level result = 10marks/points while two O’level results = 3 marks/points.
Similarly, each grade will now have its equivalent points/marks in this manner; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks which means the having better grades in your O’level result gives you a better chance of securing admission.
The next to be considered on the point system is your UTME Score. Candidates will be awarded marks/points based on their 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points. The higher your score, the higher your chances of securing admission.
This means that what we previously know as institutions cut-off-marks will now be known as institutions cut-off points which will be arrived at after putting all the aforementioned into consideration.
  1. JAMB provisional admission is now a means to an end and not an end itself. This means that JAMB may offer a candidate a provisional admissions and such candidate will still be denied admission by his/her institution because he or she comes below the cut-off point for his/her course in that particular institution.
For instance you may be given provisional admission to study MBBS in UNIBEN by JAMB having obtained a UTME score of 260. If your institution’s cut-off point for medicine is 95 points and you come below that number of points after the screening, you will likely be denied admission.
  1. Admission process will still put into considerations factors like catchment area and ELDS (Educationally Less Developed States) in determining the number of candidates admitted. Admission by merit is 45%, catchment area 35% and ELDS 20%.
The issue of Science to arts ratio will still be in place. For universities Science to arts ratio will be 60:40, Polytechnics 70:30. However for specialized institutions (Technology, Science Agriculture etc) it will be 100% related to their specialty. Also 90% of admission will go to UTME candidates while 10% will go to Direct Entry candidates.
  1. Schools are still at liberty to charge a certain fee for the screening of candidates. However, the Board did not stipulate how much institutions are to charge for this.

How to check if you are Eligible for Admission 2019

Here is how the 2017/18 Admission Screening will be calculated;
Step 1 – Number of sittings for O’Level
1) One Sitting = 10 marks
2) Two Sittings = 3marks
Total marks obtainable = 10marks
Step 2 – O’Level Result Grading from 5 subjects
A (A1) = 6marks
B (B2, B3) = 4marks
C (C4, C5, C6) = 3marks
Total marks obtainable = 30marks
Step 3 – JAMB UTME Score Grades

 Varsity workers to begin nationwide strike Monday
The non-academic workers of Nigerian universities, under the auspices of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, have resolved to embark on a one-week warning strike nationwide from August 19 to 23.
The unions said in Abuja on Friday that the strike was necessitated by the refusal of the Federal Government to attend to their demands after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum given to the authorities.
This development was contained in a letter signed by SSANU President and Chairman of the Joint Action Committee, Mr Samson Ugwoke, and General Secretary, Mr Peters Adeyemi.
The demands of the unions included the payment of their earned allowances, the university staff schools’ matter, and the renegotiation of the 2019 Federal Government of Nigeria’s agreement with the unions. The unions instructed all members and institutions to comply with the warning strike from Monday or face sanctions.
The planned one-week strike of SSANU and NASU is coming after about five months when the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its four-month-old strike in February 2019.
The SSANU and NASU had embarked on a nationwide strike on December 4, 2017, following the failure of the government to grant their demands.

STUDENT’S RAPE: No attempt to sweep case under carpet — Ondo Police

AKURE—THE Ondo State Police Command, yesterday, dispelled insinuations that security agencies in the state planned to sweep the rape case against soldiers under the carpet.

Some soldiers were alleged to have raped a 300 level student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko at a military checkpoint


Spokesperson of the Ondo Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, in a statement, said: “The Ondo State Police Command wishes to announce to the general public that the alleged rape case against a soldier attached to the 32 Artillery Brigade Akure is currently under investigation. “The command in synergy with our military counterparts will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is served in this case.



“We, therefore, wish to inform Nigerians that there is no attempt whatsoever to sweep the case under the carpet as being insinuated by some people.” Speaking on the Tuesday bank robbery in Iju, Akure North council area of the state, the Police spokesperson said that the timely intervention of police detectives foiled the robbery. Joseph said: “The robbers who used dynamites to force their way into the bank succumbed to the superior firepower of our men by escaping into the bush with some of them suffering bullet wounds. “Our men are on the trail of the suspects who were forced to abandon the two vehicles they came with.”

Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) Scholarships 2020/2021 (Fully Funded to Study in UK)

Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) ScholarshipsAfrica Initiative for Governance (AIG) is now accepting applications from eligible Nigerians and Ghanaians for its 2020/2021 scholarships. The deadline for submission of application for the Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) Scholarshipsis 23rd September, 2019.
To achieve our goal of being a catalyst for public sector transformation, AIG will every year, for five years starting in 2017, fund five scholarships for outstanding West Africans from all backgrounds who are passionate about the public sector, to pursue the Master of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government , University of Oxford. Upon graduation, AIG Scholars will be expected to return to their home country and apply their learning experience as change agents in their country’s public sector. 
The AIG Scholarships are full scholarships covering fees, accommodation and living expenses
Our Scholarships Programme is targeted at graduates between the ages of 25 and 35, some of whom may have work experience. The Scholars will be exceptionally intelligent graduates who have excelled academically as well as in other areas of their lives.

Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) Scholarships Eligibility Criteria.

Requirements:
  • Be a citizen of Nigeria or Ghana
  • Be between the ages of 25 and 35 years (must not be 36 years old by December 31, 2019)
  • Have a first-class or second-class upper undergraduate degree with honours (or equivalent international qualifications), as a minimum, in any discipline. For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA sought is 3.7 out of 4.0
  • Be preferably top 10% of graduating class (First, Second or Master’s Degree) – evidence to be provided
  • Provide evidence of game-changing leadership and resultant impact
  • Show skills and interests outside of academics (evidence to be provided)
Please note that:
  • Academic distinction and leadership potential are key priorities for selection.
  • In the case of candidates with second-class upper qualifications, a Master’s, second degree or relevant professional qualification will be an advantage.
  • Only applicants shortlisted for the next stage of the selection process will be contacted and any inquiries regarding individual application status are strictly prohibited.
  • Applications sent via post or in person are NOT acceptable.
  • Candidates who emerge as finalists in the Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) selection process will be expected to apply directly to the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, for admissions.     • Why the AIG Scholarship and the MPP Programme at BSG-Oxford are important to you and how you would utilise this opportunity.
    • The description of a personal challenge you have overcome or an achievement that you believe demonstrates your leadership potential, and the impact of that achievement.

AUN Undergraduate Admission Requirements for Local & International Applicants.

  • Students must possess a minimum Jamb score of 160 or JAMB’s yearly official cut off score to be considered for admission at AUN.
  • Also required for admissions consideration are five (5) credits, including English Language and Mathematics, on no more than two SSCE sittings, or an equivalent from a country that requires other types of exit exams or standardized tests. Exceptions, if any, are made on a case-by-case basis.
  • Candidates seeking admission into the Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honors) program must in addition possess a credit in Literature-in-English.


  • Having the above scores and grades does not guarantee admission into the University. The above mentioned requirements only qualifies you for admission consideration and not necessarily acceptance.     • Potential enrollees with passports and visas that have less than six months to expire must present evidence that such documents can be renewed automatically without interrupting their study period
    • Such evidence must include but not limited to written commitments from the embassies of their home countries in Nigeria
    • Prospective students are encouraged to reside on campus as adequate hostel accommodation is available and will be allocated on completion of housing fee payment

  • Admission Processing
    • An AUN Admission Committee will review completed applications only.
    • Applicants are advised to retain original copies of their academic documents for future use, as AUN does not return any of the submitted documents once registration is completed.
